How does ACHOLSAFE work?

Supplementation with highly purified extracts of essential phospholipids (EPLs) have been clinically shown to protect and improve liver function. EPLs have long been known to be effective in treating alcoholic liver disease but there is now growing awareness of the liver regeneration benefits in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In South Africa, there is a high prevalence of diseases such as HIV, TB and Hepatitis B, all of which can cause infectious liver disease. There is also a rising epidemic of diabetes and obesity that is increasing the incidence of NAFLD.

• EPLs produce desired effect in alcoholic hepatitis with its positive effects on the parameters of hepatocyte integrity.
• EPLs as a nutritional supplement resulted in a significant improvement in clinical parameters and transaminases for all NAFLD patients. Ultrasound and LSM revealed modest improvement.
• EPL also show significant effectiveness in chronic hepatitis B patients with no co-morbidities. Specifically, improvement is seen in serum markers of liver fibrosis, indicating a reversal of fibrosis before progression to cirrhosis. EPLs are also effective in acute viral hepatitis at reducing serum aminotransferases and speeding up bilirubin metabolism to aid recovery from jaundice.
• EPLs have been shown to be effective in normalizing serum ALT and AST levels in those taking anti-TB drugs.
The results of a study conducted in 240 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis treated with EPL 900mg/day in conjunction with a standard anti- TB regimen of isoniazid, streptomycin and rifampicin showed a 50% reduction in the incidence of elevated transaminase values compared to a control group taking the hepatotoxic tuberculostatic without EPL.
