Description: Amalar (pyrimethamine and sulfadoxine) is an antimalarial medication used to treat malaria. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria and killing the parasites in the body.

Key features:
• Effective in treating malaria caused by chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum.
• Administered as a single oral dose, usually following a course of quinine.
• Can also be used for malaria prophylaxis, starting 1-2 days before travel to an endemic area and continuing for 4-6 weeks after returning.

Side effects:
• Severe reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, which can be fatal.
• Skin rash.
