Description:  Atorvastatin is indicated for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol levels) and the prevention of cardiovascular disease. It is particularly effective in patients with multiple risk factors for coronary heart disease, such as diabetes, smoking, or hypertension.
Mechanism of Action:
Atorvastatin belongs to a class of drugs known as statins. It works by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme involved in the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver. By blocking this enzyme, atorvastatin reduces the amount of cholesterol produced, particularly low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol. Additionally, it can raise levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, known as “good” cholesterol.

– Atorvastatin also increases the number of LDL receptors on the surface of hepatic cells.

Caution.
-Liver function tests should be performed before the initiation of treatment and periodically thereafter.
-Use with caution in patients with a history of liver disease or heavy alcohol use.
-Atorvastatin may increase the risk of myopathy, including rhabdomyolysis. Patients should be advised to report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness.
